sophie solomon – poison sweet madeira

November 13th, 2006

[see the advert] ì’ll start by saying 10 outa 10. this is a tipping site not a sit down and write an essay as to why you should also like it. some tip offs should be done with right index finger up to ones lips. Sophie Solomon, first heard on cora venus lunny on rte radio 1. not knowing what it really was I crashed into it on myspace the same week (accident? i think not) bought the ALBUM on itunes based on the all too short samples on the myspace page. youtube tell me she played with oi va voi.. thats all I need to know… how come KT Tunstall sophie solomon and oi va voi have all played together, not at the same time and I have each of their debut albums…. (before I knew of this fact) do I believe in accidents?

A Static Lullaby

November 13th, 2006

[myspace] 96K/2.2M friends/plays; wikipedia saysA Static Lullaby is a post-hardcore band formed in Chino Hills, California in 2001. Their sound consists of intense distorted or screaming vocals countered with melodic singing. They are known for their heavy guitar lines and fast drums.” new album reviewed here. So why drop it into MT? well its different and anger is an energy, i think it works.

Eleanor McEvoy – out there

September 5th, 2006

soon to be released – out there by Eleanor is her sixth studio album in 14 years… by far the best,, this is classic singer songwriter stuff, easy on the ear not on the mind. packed with 15 songs I had a good chance to listen to it looking out the window on the train to Leitrim last Thursday… I’ve played it through and the highlights are ‘suffer so well’ and ‘(When You) Smile’ on part two of the CD. And its not a CD, its an SACD… none of yer mp3 shite here…. its Super Audio as has been the last 3 albums from McEvoy (pioneer!) I will add to this post and maybe even a review. in all my years, I wont hear a finer album.

The Puppini Sisters

September 5th, 2006

[myspace] [website]

first seen by me on Le Mag Euronews a few weeks back, got their CD “betcha bottom dollar” and put it into high personal rotation in my fav list. they list influences like The Andrews Sisters, The Boswell Sisters, Belleville Rendez-vous, Marlene Dietrich, Fred & Ginger, Kate Bush, Mike Flowers, Joan Crawford, Duckie, The Smiths, Tom Waits. isn’t Belleville Rendez-vous a film… (with similar music?)

On tour in October around the UK (no Irish dates?) they have been mixed up with the pipettes by one pop picker I know… pay attention now.. they’re called the puppini sisters…

Freshmen “You Never Heard Anything Like It
Release Records – RL 975 – 1979
[mp3] [Irish Show Bands]

So Im too young to remember this from 1979 but we were playing it on the radio in 1986 (20 years ago this week) in memory of Big Beat Radio, Baldoyle’s 4th pirate radio station, and we thought we were first!. If you have a copy of this single – about 8 years ago Record Collector Magazine had it listed at £20. must have valued more since. I have a dusty 7″ copy somewhere.
