If I mentioned Julie Fowlis, from The Outer Hebrides, sings Traditional Folk Music in nothing else but Scottish Gaelic and the opening song from her latest album, Cuilidh, is about a bonnet, then, if you weren’t a folkie you would pass that statement by and move on to the next.
However, if I just left the statement as Julie Fowlis is a young female singer with a great voice and she’s got a MySpace page, then you’d go and have a look.
Now go and find her MySpace page, play Hug air a Bhonaid Mhoir and before the song has finished , all the misgivings that you may have had perceived from the opening statement will have instantly disappeared. Moreover, you will want hear it again and again.

It’s not often (nor usually very polite) that you find yourself revelling in the misfortune of those you admire and respect, so when it does happen it should be over something pr-et-ty special.
Such is the glee with which I delight in the repeated romantic misfortune of one Laura Stevenson of Belfast.

A rare and evocative songstress, usually found armed with only a piano and the scars of heartbreak. Simple melody lines riddled with the sort of honesty your nearest and dearest should advise against, Miss Stevenson paints with musical broadstrokes. The resulting work, like, most of the other great wonders of the world, if you stand too close it may not make sense, take a step back and the sheer majesty hits you.

Give her a listen and your ears will love you forever.

Kat Flint was born in Barbados, raised in Aberdeen and now lives in London. She was holding down a full time job when Cara Dillon invited her to support her on her UK tour in the spring of 2006. It was a case of hold on to the job or jump. Much to the delight of the Cara Dillon fans, the Kat jumped, now it’s up to us to ensure that she landed safely on her feet.
Rather than attempt to wander off into some aimless description of how she sounds , or what messages she is supposed to convey, I invite you to visit Kat Flint’s myspace page and form your own opinions. One thing I am certain of is that after your visit you and I will agree that such a talent should not be left unheard by the many.
If you feel generous enough to help with the launch of her debut album, and you do so before mid March 2007, you may find your name listed in the sleeve notes.

Sophie Solomon, first heard on cora venus lunny on rte radio 1. not knowing what it really was I crashed into it on myspace the same week (accident? i think not) bought the ALBUM on itunes based on the all too short samples on the myspace page. youtube tell me she played with oi va voi.. thats all I need to know… how come KT Tunstall sophie solomon and oi va voi have all played together, not at the same time and I have each of their debut albums…. (before I knew of this fact) do I believe in accidents?

And its not a CD, its an SACD… none of yer mp3 shite here…. its Super Audio as has been the last 3 albums from McEvoy (pioneer!) I will add to this post and maybe even a review. in all my years, I wont hear a finer album.
