Thanks to a newsletter e-mail from Duke Special, advertising a show on BBC Radio Ulster, I discovered Julie Feeney, a wonderful Irish singer/songwriter.

She opened the show with a (I’m beginning to hate this over-used descriptive) haunting song called Aching. She holds the note on the ‘A’ for around 30 seconds or so while the string section seems to do the breathing. Suffice it to say, Aching is a truly beautiful song and it is the opening track on an understandably, much acclaimed debut album entitled 13 Songs.

To say Julie is articulate and educated is an understatement. I found this on Wikipedia :- “Feeney played with the Galway Youth Orchestra, studied music and psychology at University College Cork, and after moving to Dublin, graduated from Trinity College Dublin in 2002 with a master’s in music and media technologies.”

With credits from the likes of The Guardian and Sunday Times, appearances in Lord of the Dance and Riverdance, as well as an exemplorary education record, you won’t need too much convincing that ‘13 Songs’ is a top-class album and an asset to any discerning music lover’s collection.

Kat Flint was born in Barbados, raised in Aberdeen and now lives in London. She was holding down a full time job when Cara Dillon invited her to support her on her UK tour in the spring of 2006. It was a case of hold on to the job or jump. Much to the delight of the Cara Dillon fans, the Kat jumped, now it’s up to us to ensure that she landed safely on her feet.
Rather than attempt to wander off into some aimless description of how she sounds , or what messages she is supposed to convey, I invite you to visit Kat Flint’s myspace page and form your own opinions. One thing I am certain of is that after your visit you and I will agree that such a talent should not be left unheard by the many.
If you feel generous enough to help with the launch of her debut album, and you do so before mid March 2007, you may find your name listed in the sleeve notes.

It looks like Belfast boy, Duke Special (aka Pete Wilson) is finally getting some richly deserved recognition for his talent. Freewheel , due to be released Feb 5th, is getting steady airplay on BBC R2. We at Music Tipping wish him every success with it.

Sophie Solomon, first heard on cora venus lunny on rte radio 1. not knowing what it really was I crashed into it on myspace the same week (accident? i think not) bought the ALBUM on itunes based on the all too short samples on the myspace page. youtube tell me she played with oi va voi.. thats all I need to know… how come KT Tunstall sophie solomon and oi va voi have all played together, not at the same time and I have each of their debut albums…. (before I knew of this fact) do I believe in accidents?
