Julie’s Aching Is So Soothing

Thanks to a newsletter e-mail from Duke Special, advertising a show on BBC Radio Ulster, I discovered Julie Feeney, a wonderful Irish singer/songwriter.

She opened the show with a (I’m beginning to hate this over-used descriptive) haunting song called Aching. She holds the note on the ‘A’ for around 30 seconds or so while the string section seems to do the breathing. Suffice it to say, Aching is a truly beautiful song and it is the opening track on an understandably, much acclaimed debut album entitled 13 Songs.

To say Julie is articulate and educated is an understatement. I found this on Wikipedia :- “Feeney played with the Galway Youth Orchestra, studied music and psychology at University College Cork, and after moving to Dublin, graduated from Trinity College Dublin in 2002 with a master’s in music and media technologies.”

With credits from the likes of The Guardian and Sunday Times, appearances in Lord of the Dance and Riverdance, as well as an exemplorary education record, you won’t need too much convincing that ‘13 Songs’ is a top-class album and an asset to any discerning music lover’s collection.

It’s not often (nor usually very polite) that you find yourself revelling in the misfortune of those you admire and respect, so when it does happen it should be over something pr-et-ty special.
Such is the glee with which I delight in the repeated romantic misfortune of one Laura Stevenson of Belfast.

A rare and evocative songstress, usually found armed with only a piano and the scars of heartbreak. Simple melody lines riddled with the sort of honesty your nearest and dearest should advise against, Miss Stevenson paints with musical broadstrokes. The resulting work, like, most of the other great wonders of the world, if you stand too close it may not make sense, take a step back and the sheer majesty hits you.

Give her a listen and your ears will love you forever.

At the moment, the best place to buy Celine Carroll’s latest album, Itch, is from her web site,at one of her gigs, or from Road Records. If, however, you find a copy at your local High Street music emporium, then Music Tipping would have done its job.
Celine writes, sings and produces her own quality, yet uncomplicated, music and she lists Paul McCartney, Elvis Presley and Gilbert O’Sullivan amongst her influences.
Currently, Celine is getting regular successful gigs at Bewley’s Cafe Theatre, Grafton Street, Dublin. However, there are plans to take her music to other cities in Ireland and, hopefully to the UK. In order to render this planned Irish tour a success, pestering your local radio station for your favourite Celine Carroll song is , of course, advised.
